If a progam i downloading says it's free of adware, spyware, viruses etc, on the site does that mean it is?

Maybe, maybe not. Some software is certified as proof it does not contain malware, but if a website is simply stating that it does not, theres no way to be sure. Just make sure you run scans after installing/using it.

Not really, when you download freeware, read the contract explicitely! It may have software you dont want!
