Microsoft Defender and Spybot are pretty good. The latter even has a real time scanner called ''Teatime'' which will run in the background and warn you if any software tries to change your windows registry - which is basically where all the software settings are made.

Just google/yahoo the wo software for download links.

Ad-aware by Lavasoft is good for Advertisement pop-ups, but you have to run the scan manually.

Also you can get free commercial grade (and very good) Anti Virus software through Computer Associates if you use a Microsoft Operating System.
