I'm running W2K, SP 4 on a small, older laptop I've had for years. Recently it has started to run slowly, and I notice that Windows Explorer is constantly peaking up to near 100% of my CPU every 10 seconds. I recently switched from IE to Firefox, but this happens under either browser. I recently started using Ewido free anti-spyware in addition to my Lavasoft Ad-Aware. I recently started using AVG free anti-virus in addition to my Norton. My machine stays pretty clean, but, is there some conflict here? My hard drive is only half full. I've defragged, cleaned up temporary files, but everything still crawls. Another thing that started about the same time - I'm constantly ''losing'' my Active Desktop and having to click to restore it.
I seem to remember having this problem a while back... Well, we are talking windows 2000 right?
So, I poked around and discovered that it had something to do with my USB hub being plugged in and having a USB mouse and a USB keyboard plugged in. There was some monitoring software that kicked in every 5 to 10 seconds to check if the USB devices were still there.
In reality, it could be anything causing the CPU spike so the best thing to do is to run a software that tells you exactly who is doing it. Once you find out who is doing it, then you will know how to stop it.
I am using Win Xp Professional +Sp pack 2, which is not a genuine one. That's why I have to turn of automatic updates.Firewall turned off.I have turned off system restore, as per some ones advice.
I have tried the following programs to fix the above problem.
I have tried..Norton anti Virus, results nothing.
Used spy nomore, which is useless.
Then AVG free anti spyware.30 days Trial. No result.
Then WinsockxpFix...It has also no result.
Then used spy bot and Destroy which is free.No result.
Downloaded MOzila Firefox with google tool bar ...no result
Still I have same problem Please help me. I don't want to Formate my Computer, as it has some vital informations I have stored.
My modem is in good condition, because I have used it on an another lap top it worked fine. For me I have to restart my Computer again and again to get my broad band connection back for browsing for another 15 to 20 mins.
I used to update my downloaded anti-virus or anti spy wares regularly.
do you have the problem with other programs on your computer or just the broadband connection? if just the broadband connection then it sounds like your computer has a extreme overdose of cookies which you can delete on internet explorer by going to internet options. but then you might also wanna delete your internet connection on the computer and re upload it taking in to consideration of course if you have the original disk or not.
-Zonealarms
-AVG Free Antivirus
-AVG Free Anti Spyware
-Safer networking Spybot
-CCleaner
Thks in advance
All are very good, I use AVG Antivirus, CCleaner, and Spybot myself.
yes
I use them all and have no problems. They are all free and I recommend them only thing is the antispyware AVG is limited after trial period. I would also suggest you get ad-aware, windows defender and spywareblaster too.
The link below has them all to download free.

Hi there,
Anything AVG is VERY good. I have been using it for years and been very pleased with it. And, best of all, the personal versions are free. The same can be said of Zone Alarm. Program ''permission'' selection and alert system is hard to beat. I also use Spybot Search and Destroy which is great (and free) but be careful there are are other ''Spybot'' programs that are not good. These suggest you scan your PC, find loads of spurious problems and then ask you to pay for them to remove the imaginary problems. No personal experience of CCleaner but have heard some good reports. You will need to make your own mind up on that one.
I know Filetopia claims to be free from spyware and adware and I know eMule claim to be free from threats.
But how about, Kazaa (not sure boout spelling) and LimeWire?
LimeWire is not the safest place you can download viruses or other treats, that affect your computer performance.
Stop stealing music...then you don't need to worry about getting viruses from peer-to-peer software.
Limewire is great if you know what type of files to download. If you are downloading any file other than a picture, make sure it is greater than 1000kb because if it is lower than that it is probably a virus. also you can scan your programs after you download them with an anti virus program
ANYTHING you download can have viruses! Use your judgment. A major software package that's only 2MB probably has a virus and lots of trash in it. A full movie thats less than 50MB is probably a porn clip named as something else. Some Audio clips (WMA, MP3) have come through for me with viruses (that my software deleted). Etc.
Just keep your virus and spyware blockers updated and active whenever you're downloading. It seems that almost nothing today is immune from being preloaded with a bug.

I have defragmented and Avg free edition, spyware doctor free edition, yahoo antiSpy installed
Does it start up in same mode?
(press F8 on restart and select safe mode from the menu)
If it does, try doing a system restore (Start\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore).
Did it happen after you install a 3rd party software, uninstall it and see if it helps.
I am currently in the process of finishing my BA in computer information technology and sometimes fix comptuters for my family and friends....how much would you charge for my cousin.......
1.Installed a wireless router so he can get access to the internet to two PCs he had. (he didn't wireless access so disabled that)
2. Reinstalled Windows XP.
3. Installed a free antivirus, ''spyware terminator'' as well as limewire, quicktime, microsoft office 2003 (my cousin's cd), and nero (my cousins cd).
4. Before all that i backed up like 100 songs and some pictures he had and restored them on the new reinstalled PC.
How much should i charge him....plz consider that he is my cousin. ???
something reasonable
I wouldn't charge him anything but I wouldn't push more than $100.
well for family i wouldn't charge any thing.......maybe dinner??? for someone off the street 100 bux..........if you had your own business maybe 125.00........overhead............
scott
Most shops, or MCDRT's, will charge 100-150 just to reinstall XP and get everything functional again. The router and software are not much time, the backup takes a little bit. 150 would be appropriate for all that at a shop. What you charge him is your call, but half that sounds about right, plus gas!!
cousin??? make him buy you dinner thats all. let him know if you have to see him for this problem again your gonna charge him $50.
anyone not related charge them.....$75
